The Perumal here is known as Adi Ranganathan and is said to have appeared
here and stayed here before he went to Srirangam. This divyadesam is one
among the five Ramngams (Pancha rangama). The othre four are
aathi rangam (Sri Rangapattinam, Mysore),
appaala rangam (TiruppEr Nagar),
maththiya rangam (Sri rangam, trichy),
chathurththa rangam (kumbakonam),
pancha rangam (Inthalur, Maayaavaram)
.
Since this sthalam is mentioned before Srirangam, it is believed that
Ranganathar is said to have been here before He went to Srirangam.
